History
St. Matthew’s Episcopal School is an elementary school offering a complete academic curriculum with excellence in education and a college preparatory environment as primary goals. St. Matthew’s Episcopal School dates back to 1947 when Mrs. Margaret Odom opened a Kindergarten. In 1970, a day school embracing Kindergarten through third grade became a reality. Thereafter, an additional class was added annually until the seventh grade level was reached. Today, St. Matthew’s Episcopal School, under the leadership of Headmaster Cheryl Matherne, operates an institution of learning consisting of Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten through seventh grade.

St. Matthew’s Episcopal School occupies a unique position in its community. We serve the same diverse and vibrant Terrebonne-Lafourche community as several other private schools, yet we are a small school, rooted in traditions of Christian service and global awareness. By using a variety of instructional strategies and learning opportunities, St. Matthew’s addresses the academic, spiritual, and psychosocial needs of our students and fosters a strong sense of personal and social responsibility. St. Matthew’s Episcopal School has a tradition of sixty years of excellence in education.

St. Matthew’s Alma Mater

by R. McMeel

Our hallowed halls remind us

Of friendships that we’ve made.

The memories we’ll cherish

In our hearts to save.

The teamwork and commitment,

Learned with self-respect,

The characters and choices made

Through life we will reflect.

Experience gave us knowledge

To help us to achieve,

Guiding us to greatness,

In that we do believe.

And so, beloved St. Matthew’s,

You’ve given us so much.

We’ll share our knowledge and our love,

So other lives we touch.

Location
St. Matthew's Episcopal School, located in downtown Houma adjacent to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with the church encompasses approximately one city block. The old-fashioned school setting provides a warm and nurturing environment.

What I love most about St. Matthew’s is the feeling that at St. Matthew’s they really care about and nurture each child. The atmosphere is one of friendship, helping others and openness, both at the school and with other parents.”  —~SMES parent

Aim and Philosophy
St. Matthew's Episcopal School directly involves each student in the pursuit of academic excellence while developing self-confidence and positive relationships with others. The total environment-classroom, library, campus, and chapel-serves to reinforce both family values and the God-given dignity of each individual student.

St. Matthew's serves the child whose ability is average or above and who easily adapts to classroom routines. The school maintains low teacher/pupil ratios and provides each child the opportunity to develop fully his or her own potential.
